The Effects Of Deforestation On A Local And Global Scale

This paper will examine the various components of deforestation on a local and global scale. The following data seen throughout the research paper will analyze the different types of deforestation and the detrimental impact it leaves on the earth.. I contributed my own data and analysis in analyzing the time analysis of the concentration of carbon dioxide in the troposphere represented in Figure A. I created a time analysis map with NASA Giovanni between 1980 and 2002. The time period was chosen to represent the effects once deforestation began to increase around the 1980s. I also generated a map of deforestation in California through Global Forest Watch. II. Introduction Climate change is such a prevalent topic of concern in modern day that it is important to understand the contributions to it, deforestation being one of them. Deforestation exacerbates the already negative consequences of climate change. Forests play a fundamental role in many different aspects of earth systems and deforestation is decreasing the benefits of forests. Forests cover approximately thirty-one percent of the land cover in the world; however, 46-56 square miles of forestlands are lost each year (World Wildlife Fund). As technology continues to advance and the world increasingly becomes more industrialized, deforestation has the potential to get so extreme it will be difficult to go back and fix the negative effects. The first proximate cause to deforestation is infrastructure expansion (Geist Lambin, 2002, p. 144). This refers to transportation (roads), private and public markets, rural and urban settlements, and private and public services (water lines, oil exploitation, etc†¦) (Geist Lambin, 2002, p. 144). The next cause is agricultural expansion, which includes, large or small-scale cultivations, shifting cultivationsRead MoreThe Lung of Our Earth904 Words   |  4 Pagesare lost every second. Experts estimate that the last remaining rain forests could be consumed in less than 40 years. Obviously, deforestation has been becoming an al arming phenomenon for the whole world. Writing about this issue, Laura Lopen, John Maier and Dick Thompson express some quite strong opinions. Deforestation occurs in many ways. Most of the clearing is done for agricultural purposes-grazing cattle, planting crops. Poor farmers chop down a small area (typically a few acres) and burn the tree trunks-a process called Slash and Burn agriculture. Intensive, or modern, agriculture occurs on a much larger scale, sometimes Read MoreImpact of Deforestation on the Earth Essay1375 Words   |  6 PagesDeforestation is the elimination of existing trees from the earth; attributable factors include urbanization, logging, ranching, and farming and to some extent land speculation. Land speculation can be included as cleared land is more valuable than forested land. Deforestation, done in the name of progress, and the long-term, devastating effects of it, is killing our planet. To understand the effects of deforestation one must understand the reasoning behind the decision to clear forestlands.
